ACE Has Kicked Off!

Hey there, craft lovers! Did you know that planning for the 29th annual
American Craft Exposition has officially kicked off? That’s right, the ACE committee members met recently on the 16th of January to share their vision and get excited about the 2013 show. We heard jewelry artist Terri Logan’s inspirational story on why she creates art and also on the phenomenal research from Gus Rodriguez, MD, from NorthShore University HealthSystem.

There’s a reason why we’re so passionate about ACE and starting the year off right: It’s one of the few juried art shows that raises funds to find a cure for ovarian cancer. This cancer, often called the “silent killer” because symptoms are easy to dismiss, is often diagnosed too late for effective treatment.

Dr. Gus Rodriguez has found that using the routine use of the combination estrogen-progestin oral contraceptive pill results in a remarkable 30-50 percent reduction in the risk of developing not only ovarian cancer but also endometrial cancer. Furthermore, Dr. Rodriguez and his team have found that combining progestin with a second, non-toxic preventive agent, like vitamin D, enhances the progestin potency with less side effects. Currently Dr. Rodriguez and his team plan to test the progestin-vitamin D combination alone as it will provide additional preclinical evidence that can be tested in the clinic.
